Signs of a fracture
- Pain, swelling and bruising after a fall, twist, crush or impact
- Difficulty or inability to put weight on the foot
- Visible deformity
- Pain that builds gradually with activity, which can indicate a stress fracture
Seek emergency care for severe pain, obvious deformity, bone through the skin, numbness or a foot that looks pale or blue.
Types of injury
Common examples include ankle fractures, fractures of the heel bone, midfoot injuries involving the Lisfranc joint complex, metatarsal fractures, toe fractures and stress fractures. Some break the bone alone; others damage the surrounding ligaments and joint surfaces, which affects how the injury should be treated.
Non-surgical treatment
Fractures that are stable and well aligned are often treated with a cast, boot or brace and a period of limited weight bearing, followed by gradual return to activity and rehabilitation.
Surgical treatment
Surgery is typically recommended when bones have shifted out of position, when a joint surface is involved, or when the injury is unstable. It generally involves realigning the bones and holding them with plates, screws or other fixation while they heal.
Recovery and follow-up
Healing time and weight-bearing restrictions depend on the bone, the severity of the injury, and your overall health. Following instructions closely and attending follow-up visits helps protect the result, and rehabilitation helps restore strength and motion afterward.
What to expect at your visit
A first visit typically includes a review of your symptoms and history, an examination of the foot and ankle (often including how you stand and walk), and imaging such as X-rays when needed. Dr. Ajdari will explain your options, including non-surgical care, so the two of you can choose a plan that fits your goals.
